Business](https://www.eiken.or.jp/linguaskill/test-contents/)と[GCAS](https://www.eiken.or.jp/linguaskill/test-contents/)ではグラフを説明する力やプレゼンテーション力が求められます。「試験を受けているときにグラフの説明で分数がスムーズに口から出てこなかった」という学習者の声を聞きますので、今回は日本語とは異なる分数や小数の読み方についてご紹介します。 分数の読み方は分子→分母を序数で言う 日本語話者は、英語で分数を読むことに慣れるまで時間がかかります。これは、日本語では1/3を3分の1のように分母を読んでから分子を読むのに対して、英語では分子から分母を読むためです。また、分子はそのまま数字で読みますが、分母は序数として読みます。 まずは序数の復習をしましょう。原則thを数字の後ろにつけるのですが、イレギュラータイプがあります。イレギュラーなものは太字になっている単語です。 ＜序数＞ 1st first 2nd second 3rd third 4th fourth 5th fifth　※ファイブスではない 6th sixth 7th seventh 8th eighth ※エイトスではない 9th ninth 10th tenth 11th eleventh 12th twelfth　※トゥエルブスではない 分母は序数として言うのが基本ですが、1/2だけは例外です。これはa halfまたはone halfと読みます。分母をsecondとは言いません。 分母が3以上の数字になるものは原則、序数で読み、分子が2以上なら序数を複数系にします。例えばこのように読みます。 1/3 one third 2/3 two thirds 3/4 three fourths 4/5 four fifths 1/6 one sixth 2/7 two sevenths 5/8 five eighths 8/9 eight ninths また、もう1つ例外があります。1/4のように分母が4のときは読み方がquarterに変化することが多いです。実は1/4は3つの読み方があります。one fourth, a quarter, one quarterのどれもを耳にしますが、a quarterが一番多く聞かれるように思います。グラフを見て、「AはBの4分の1程度です」と言いたいときはA is about a quarter of B.と言います。 ちなみに、帯分数は整数を言った後にandで分数をつなぎます。 2 1/2 は two and a halfと言い、5 3/8 は five and three eighthsと言います。 いかがでしょうか。ルールはそんなに複雑ではありませんので、慣れれば簡単ですよ！ 小数はシンプル 小数点は分数よりシンプルです。小数点より左の整数部分を通常通り読み、小数点をpointと発音します。そのあとに小数点以下の数字を１つずつ読みます。例えば、15.1629であればfifteen point one six two nineです。小数点は大きな数字を簡潔に言うときにもよく使われます。例えば、3.6 millionはthree point six millionと読みます。 なお1の位が0の場合、zeroを省略してpoint→小数点以下を読むことも多いので、0.5608であれば、point five six zero eightまたはpoint five six oh eightと言います。zeroはアルファベットのOに似ているため、このようにohと言うことが多いのです。 こういった数字のルールはたくさんあります。知っているようで知らない数字をもっと身近に感じ、使いこなしていただけるように、数字に特化した本を出版しました。興味を持たれた方はぜひ書店でお手にとってみてください。音源で繰り返し口に出して言うトレーニングをしてくださいね。たくさん練習すれば考えずに言えるようになります！
