If you’re OK with that, let’s fire away. と言われました。 冒頭のI will need your information, including your credit card number.「クレジットカード番号を含む（個人）情報が必要です」はビジネス英語のやり取り練習のロールプレイスクリプトに入っていそうな内容です。しかし、そのあとには教材であればWould that be OK?「問題ありませんでしょうか」といった表現が使われていることが多いように思います。 ところがIf you’re OK with that, let’s fire away.「問題なければ、どんどん話しましょう（どんどん進めましょう）」と言われたわけです。こういったことは、英語表現をより多く学んでいけば理解力も増していきますので、さまざまな表現に出会う回数が増えることで解決できるでしょう。 その2. 文化・ものごとの進め方に関する背景知識 「英語そのものはわかる気がするけど、それでもよくわからない……」「なんでそうなるのかわからない」ということもよく起こります。これは文化的な考え方やさまざまな制度がよくわからないからです。 例えば、お子さんのいる駐在員の方が初年度に戸惑うのがお子さんの学校行事の「〇〇マラソン」(例：read-a-thon, 5km marathonなど)。お知らせを見て、「お金を持ってくるように」と書いてあることが理解できても、その理由がわからないから自分の読解力を疑ってしまうということがあります。 実は、アメリカではfundraiser(学校への寄付金集め)のためにこういった行事をすることが多いのです。子供たちががんばるので、そのがんばりを応援していることを示すために、まわりの大人たちがその子に寄付金を渡して、子供たちがその寄付金を学校に提出します。こういったことは異文化理解研修や赴任前研修などを受けることで、心の準備ができます。 その3. いい意味での鈍感力 異文化の中で生活していると、今までの常識が通用せずに「このやりとり、ストレスだ～」と感じることも多いでしょう。例えば、配送物が時間どおりに届かないので電話をして配達をお願いしたとしましょう。それでも、結局来てくれなかったので、また電話をすることがあります。そして事情を再度話しても「あなたが家にいなかったのが悪いのでは？」「いや、そもそも来てないんですよ。防犯カメラ映像を見たら絶対に来ていないことがわかります」と再主張をしないといけない、といったことが起きたりするわけです。 こういったことでストレスを溜めすぎると海外生活は困難です。郷に入っては郷に従え。日本のサービスレベルは世界最高レベルです。海外ではものごとが予定どおりにうまくいかないことがあってもイライラしない、そして何かイヤなことを言われても気にしない鈍感力が役立つようです。
