リスニングにおいてもスピーキングにおいても、発音が規範から大きくそれていないことがコミュニケーションにおいて大切です。もちろんネイティブのような発音をする必要はないと考えられますが、ネイティブの発音に寄せていくことで、スムーズに通じる可能性が高くなるのは紛れもない事実です。

今回は、ちょっと意識するだけで発音をネイティブに寄せていけるポイントをお伝えします。

子音に母音をくっつけない

母音は簡単に言うと「大きな声が出せる音」です。逆に子音は大きな声では発音できません。例えば、サッカーフィールドの反対まで聞こえる声で「おーい」ということができても、子音の/k/や/g/の音などの声をフィールドの反対まで届けることができません。

日本語の大きな特徴の一つが、全ての子音に母音の「あいうえお」をくっついて音を作り出すことです。そういう意味で、日本語には純粋な子音が存在しません。ローマ字を使って確認すると、例えば、か行であれば「ka ki ku ke ko」となり、必ず母音のa, i, u, e, oが全ての文字に入っていることがわかります。

「カタカナ英語」にならないように、英語を話すときにはこの「母音が子音にくっついている」状態にならないように注意が必要です。意識して「子音を切り分ける」ように発声練習をする必要があります。例えば、petという単語をカタカナ英語では「ペット」と書きますが、正しいtの発音はは/tu/ではなく/t/と母音の/u/を入れずに発音します。ペートゥッと最後の音を短く切る感じです。このようにしっかりと子音の音を切って、母音がくっついていないか、自身の発音を確認しましょう。

一つ一つの母音の音をきれいに言う  
![23277202](https://www.smarthabit.net/hs-fs/hubfs/23277202.jpg?width=400&height=300&name=23277202.jpg)a, e, i, o, uの各音をマスターしましょう。日本人が特に注意しないといけないのがoの発音。oの音はローマ字だとオと発音しますが、英語的な音はアのような音です。

発音記号を見ながら、全ての母音の音を音真似していく練習がおすすめです。WikipediaのウェブサイトにIPA(発音記号)とその音が流れるチャートがありますのでご活用ください。

その他、YouTube上でEnglish pronunciation vowelsと検索をかけるとたくさんのレッスン動画があります。

二重母音を意識する

二重母音は母音の音が途中で変わるものです。2つの母音が並んでいると考えると良いでしょう。カタカナでは伸ばし棒で二重母音を表してしまうため、2つ目の母音を発音していない人が目立ちます。二重母音はいくつもありますが、特に日本人がしっかりと発音できていないのがこの2つです。

・エイの音 /eɪ/  
本来はエイとはっきりと言う必要がありますが、エーと伸ばしがちです。これらの単語を言ってみましょう。  
e-mail　〇イーメイル　×イーメール  
cake   〇ケイク  ×ケーキ  
brake   〇ブレイク  ×ブレーキ

・オウの音 /oʊ/   
こちらも本来はオウとはっきりと言うべきところをオーと伸ばしがちです。これらの単語を言ってみましょう。   
go   〇ゴウ  ×ゴー  
boat  〇ボウトゥ  ×ボート  
coat   〇コウトゥ  ×コート

これらのポイントを意識して、瞬時に聞き取れる力を身に付け、ネイティブに聞き返されない発音を目指しましょう。
